Memorial Day

Our Memorial Days are usually pretty low key.  We stay in the area, sometimes do a hike or a movie (this year it was "Kung Fu Panda 2") and then barbecue for dinner at Grandma Rollin's house.  The last few years we've made a conscious effort to teach the kids about why we celebrate Memorial Day and to spend time visiting the grave sites of our Utah grandparents and talking about them.  This year it was extra memorable because Caleb is now big enough to start understanding and we had a great afternoon and evening, despite the rain, honoring our family members.
Cameron's Maternal Grandparents - Gerda and Peter Hansen
Cameron's middle name is Peter, after his grandfather.  Cameron has some great memories of this man and loves to share them with the kids.

And the tradition continues.  Cameron Peter and Caleb Peter placing flowers by their namesake.
Cameron's Paternal Grandparents - Glenn and Virginia Benson
We think it's pretty cool that their wedding anniversary is the same day as Olivia's birthday.
My Maternal Grandfather - Arden Rollins
I have so many wonderful memories with this amazing man.  And even though he passed away before Caleb was born, I am so grateful that Olivia was able to know, and still remembers, him.
I'm also grateful for the service my grandpa gave to this country and the opportunity this gives us to teach Olivia and Caleb about patriotism and service.  He was an amazing man and continues to be a strong example and presence in our extended family.
It was a great day!
